Land-based casinos

Anyone wishing to operate a casino in Switzerland requires a casino licence. On 29 November 2023, the Federal Council granted casino licences for the period from 2025–2044 .

There are currently 19 licensed casinos in Switzerland; eight of these have a Category A licence and 11 have a Category B licence.

The differences between casinos with a Category A or B licence are:

  • At land-based casinos with a Category B licence, the maximum stake for automated games of chance is limited to CHF 25 per game.
  • Cantons in which casinos with a Category B licence are located may levy a tax on the gross gaming revenue in the casinos; the tax does not apply to online games. This tax may not exceed 40% of the total casino tax payable to the federal government, which is then reduced by the amount of the cantonal tax due.
